Hauling Changes to Start April 1

A new garbage and recycling plan designed to encourage recycling and that could save residents in monthly garbage hauling costs will be available to Decatur residents starting April 1.
In December 2010 the City of Decatur approved a new waste removal system that will go into effect on April 1 after several months of public input. Under the new program, haulers will collect residential garbage once per week and residents can choose from the following two garbage collection programs:
BASIC WASTE REMOVAL SERVICE ($14.50 per month)
- Once a week pickup of up to three (3) 32-gallon cans of trash or one (1) 96-gallon toter/cart.
- Once a week pickup of Single Stream Recycling.
- Unlimited yard waste pickup for six weeks beginning April 1 and Oct. 15.
EXPANDED BASIC WASTE REMOVAL SERVICE ($17.50 per month)
- Once a week pick up of up to six (6) 32-gallon cans or two 96-gallon toters of trash (same amount of trash pickup as current twice per week service)
- Once a week pickup of Single Stream Recycling
- Unlimited yard waste pickup for six weeks beginning April 1 and Oct. 15.
Residents can add a premium yard waste option to each of the garbage plans for $1 per month that would allow for year round weekly, unlimited collection of residential yard waste.
Customers will need to contact their individual garbage hauler either by phone or by sending in THIS MAILER to select their individual garbage plan. Those who don’t do so by April 1 will be signed up for the following service plan:
If You Currently Receive Twice Per Week Service - Your new monthly plan will default to a combination of the Expanded Basic Service and Premium Yard Waste options (Once per week pickup of up to six 32 gallon cans or two 96 gallon toters and unlimited year round yard waste pick up). This will be at a cost of $18.50 per month, which includes the cost of Expanded Basic garbage service and Premium Yard Waste service.
If You Currently Receive Once Per Week Service - Your new monthly plan will default to a combination of the Basic Service and Premium Yard Waste options (Once per week pickup of up to three 32 gallon cans or one 96 gallon toter and unlimited year round yard waste pickup). This will be at a cost of $15.50 per month, which includes the cost of Basic garbage service and Premium yard waste service.
Customers will be able to change their garbage options once per 12 month period at any time. Garbage haulers will communicate to customers their individual collection dates.
Many customers have inquired about the possibility of continuing to receive back door service. The new plan includes a provision for customers to continue receiving back door service in the event of hardships at no additional charge. Haulers may choose to continue to provide back door service to their customers either as part of their regular service or for an additional fee.
