West End Neighborhood Walk Set For Tonight
DECATUR – The next in a series of City neighborhood walks will be held tonight at 5:30 p.m. Thursday May 24 within the neighborhood boundaries of the West End Neighborhood Association (WENA).
The walk will begin at Dennis Elementary School, located at 1499 W. Main St. with a brief introduction to the new Dennis Lab School project and associated local parent co-op. Over the last year the co-op has been holding activities that maximize the use of Dennis as a neighborhood resource and that encourage parent/neighborhood activities and involvement. A walk throughout the neighborhood will follow the introduction with the group heading south on Taylor avenue, west on West Decatur, North on Dennis Avenue and west on William Street before turning South again on Taylor towards the school.
Residents do not have to come to Dennis for the start of the walk; if neighbors are out and about, the group plans to just stop and talk and hear what they have to say. The purpose of the walks is for Decatur City Council and city staff to hear directly from residents of the various areas of the city both to learn about successes and neighborhood concerns.
The Council began the series of neighborhood walks earlier this month and is set to visit a different neighborhood each Thursday following Decatur City Council meetings during the summer. The Neighborhood Walks were suggested by Councilwoman Dana Ray as a means to better connect with residents, gain input on local neighborhood successes and issues and to provide and encourage direct interaction with the community.
The tentative schedule for the rest of the walks is as follows:
- 5/24 WENA (West End Neighborhood Association)
- 6/7 GM Square • 6/21 Clokey Park Neighborhood
- 7/5 NUA (Neighborhood United)
- 7/19 NWRAPS (Near West Restoration and Preservation Society)
- 8/23* OKO (Old King’s Orchard) (only one walk will be held in August due to the National Night Out Event August 7.)
- 9/6 Nelson Park/Lions Park • 9/20 South Shores
- 10/4 Fans Field Neighborhood
